Risk

Fluoroscopy is generally very safe when used for medically necessary procedures. The radiation exposure varies depending on the type and length of your procedure.

Radiation levels:

  • Simple procedures: Similar to a few regular X-rays

  • Longer procedures: Higher exposure but still within safe medical limits

  • Modern equipment uses the lowest possible radiation dose

Safety measures we take:

  • Use lead aprons to protect areas not being examined

  • Limit the X-ray beam to only the area needed

  • Use the shortest possible exposure time

  • Modern digital equipment reduces radiation requirements

Important considerations:

  • The medical benefits of your procedure far outweigh the small radiation risk

  • Please tell us if you're pregnant or might be pregnant

  • Your doctor only recommends fluoroscopy when the diagnostic information is essential

Comparison: The radiation exposure is typically much less than you'd receive from natural background radiation over several months.
