What's the purpose of drinking water before my pelvic scan?

Patient Preparation

A full bladder is essential for getting clear images during a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound:

Why it helps:

  • Your full bladder acts as an 'acoustic window' that sound waves can travel through easily

  • It pushes bowel gas and intestines out of the way, which can block the ultrasound view

  • Provides a clear reference point to identify surrounding organs

What it allows us to see better:

  • Uterus and ovaries in women

  • Prostate in men

  • Bladder wall and surrounding structures

  • Any abnormalities in the pelvic region

The science: Ultrasound waves travel well through fluid (like urine in your bladder) but are blocked by air and gas. A full bladder creates a clear 'window' for us to see through.

Instructions: Typically, drink 3-4 glasses of water about 1 hour before your appointment and avoid urinating until after the scan.
