What's the purpose of drinking water before my pelvic scan?
A full bladder is essential for getting clear images during a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound:
Why it helps:
Your full bladder acts as an 'acoustic window' that sound waves can travel through easily
It pushes bowel gas and intestines out of the way, which can block the ultrasound view
Provides a clear reference point to identify surrounding organs
What it allows us to see better:
Uterus and ovaries in women
Prostate in men
Bladder wall and surrounding structures
Any abnormalities in the pelvic region
The science: Ultrasound waves travel well through fluid (like urine in your bladder) but are blocked by air and gas. A full bladder creates a clear 'window' for us to see through.
Instructions: Typically, drink 3-4 glasses of water about 1 hour before your appointment and avoid urinating until after the scan.
