What's the duration of a CT scan?
CT scan duration varies depending on the type of scan and whether contrast is used:
Actual scanning time:
Simple CT scans: 5-10 minutes
CT scans with contrast: 15-30 minutes
Complex studies (CT angiograms): 30-60 minutes
Total appointment time:
Allow 30-60 minutes for your entire visit
This includes preparation, the scan itself, and any brief observation period
What affects duration:
Whether you need IV contrast (requires extra time for injection)
If you need to drink oral contrast beforehand (may require 1-2 hours)
How well you can lie still and follow breathing instructions
Whether additional images are needed
The actual scan:
You'll lie on a table that moves through the CT scanner
The machine makes whirring sounds as it takes images
You may be asked to hold your breath for short periods (10-20 seconds)
Planning tip: Even for quick scans, plan for at least an hour at the facility to account for check-in, preparation, and any unexpected delays.
