Duration of Scan

CT scan duration varies depending on the type of scan and whether contrast is used:

Actual scanning time:

  • Simple CT scans: 5-10 minutes

  • CT scans with contrast: 15-30 minutes

  • Complex studies (CT angiograms): 30-60 minutes

Total appointment time:

  • Allow 30-60 minutes for your entire visit

  • This includes preparation, the scan itself, and any brief observation period

What affects duration:

  • Whether you need IV contrast (requires extra time for injection)

  • If you need to drink oral contrast beforehand (may require 1-2 hours)

  • How well you can lie still and follow breathing instructions

  • Whether additional images are needed

The actual scan:

  • You'll lie on a table that moves through the CT scanner

  • The machine makes whirring sounds as it takes images

  • You may be asked to hold your breath for short periods (10-20 seconds)

Planning tip: Even for quick scans, plan for at least an hour at the facility to account for check-in, preparation, and any unexpected delays.
