Fasting requirements depend on the type of CT scan you're having:

CT scans that typically require fasting (4-6 hours):

  • Abdominal CT scans

  • Pelvic CT scans

  • Any CT scan with oral contrast

  • CT scans with IV contrast (to reduce nausea risk)

CT scans that usually don't require fasting:

  • Head/brain CT

  • Chest CT

  • Limb or joint CT scans

  • Emergency CT scans

During fasting period:

  • No food or drinks except small sips of water for medications

  • No chewing gum, sweets, or smoking

Special considerations:

  • If you're diabetic, discuss medication timing with your doctor

  • Continue essential medications with small amounts of water

  • If you're having contrast, fasting helps prevent nausea

Important: You'll receive specific instructions when your scan is booked. Follow these carefully as they're tailored to your particular examination.
