Can an Occupational Therapist help me to get a personal mobility aid (PMA)?
Yes, an Occupational Therapist can conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine your eligibility for a Personal Mobility Aid (PMA).
Before qualifying for a subsidised PMA, you will be assessed on:
- Your physical abilities including strength, balance, and coordination needed to operate a mobility device safely
- Vision and perceptual skills that affect your ability to navigate safely in different environments
- Cognitive and thinking abilities which are essential for understanding and following on-road safety guidelines
- Your specific mobility goals and daily movement needs in the environments where you will use the mobility aid
- Eligibility for subsidies which considers factors such as your Household Means Test (HHMT) results, current medical condition and long-term health outlook
Your Occupational Therapist will guide you through the relevant assessments, training and subsidy application process (if eligible).
