I have been charged for a crime. Should I engage a lawyer for my criminal case?
The decision to engage a lawyer is a personal one. It is important for you to consider the pros and cons of representing yourself versus engaging a lawyer before making a choice.
When representing yourself, you need to familiarise yourself with the legal procedures and substantive criminal law. The Court cannot relax its procedural rules and standards for you, and you must be prepared to present your case as if you have engaged a lawyer. The Court cannot act as your lawyer or advise you on how to represent yourself.
If you are confident with preparing for and conducting your own case, you may consider representing yourself.
If you are unsure, you may wish to consider engaging a lawyer to represent you in Court for your Criminal case or at least consult one before making your decision.
