Cost of living continues to be of concern to Singaporeans. Why did the PTC decide to increase fares again in the 2025 Fare Review Exercise?
Fares need to increase because of the rising costs of operations, and to continue to ensure that our 22,000 public transport workers receive good wages and quality training.
The Council considers various factors in deciding on the fare adjustment. These include the fare formula output for the year and the deferred fare quantum. The Council also considers the prevailing social and economic conditions such as fare affordability and cost pressures faced by both the public and the public transport industry.
If fare adjustments are not implemented, even more subsidies will be needed to cover the increase in operating costs. This would have to be funded by taxpayers.
