What types of external volunteering activities are public officers allowed to participate in?

Updated by PSD

The Public Service recognises officers’ desire to do good and contribute to society in meaningful ways.

In general, officers may participate in outside activities provided that the activity:

  • Does not bring the Public Service into disrepute or call into question its integrity and professionalism;

  • Does not create a real, potential, or perceived conflict of interest with the officer's official duties;

  • Does not affect or influence the performance of official duties;

  • Does not adversely impact the Public Service.

  • Does not call into question the political impartiality of the Public Service, or give rise to the perception that their official position or public resources are being used for political purposes

Participating in a personal capacity, e.g. without using their official designations, does not, in itself, remove the concerns stated above. What matters is the nature of the involvement and whether it could raise concerns, including political impartiality or a conflict of interest with the officer’s official duties.

Officers who are unsure how these principles apply to their specific circumstances can seek guidance from their agencies.
