How do I proceed to settle the inheritance / estate after the death of someone?

If the deceased had left a will, the named executor should apply for a grant of probate to execute his/her wishes in accordance to the will. If the will is accompanied by a schedule of assets, that provides a reference on the assets that need to be managed and distributed. Otherwise, the executor may need to contact organisations directly to check whether the deceased had assets, liabilities or accounts with them.

If the deceased did not leave a will, their next-of-kin may apply for a grant of letters of administration. Similarly, the next-of-kin may need to contact organisations directly to check whether the deceased had assets, liabilities or accounts with them should the NOK be unsure of the details of the deceased's estate.
