With the revised fidyah payment, it may cause financial difficulties for those who need to pay it as the amount has become more expensive. What is the ruling on those who are in financial hardship and cannot afford to pay fidyah?
The revised fidyah rate, determined based on the actual cost of a moderate meal in Singapore's current economic context, reflects the true value intended by Islamic law rather than an arbitrary increase. This approach ensures that the fidyah fulfils its purpose of providing meaningful assistance to the poor and needy, as originally prescribed.
However, Islam recognises the principle of al-taysīr (facilitation) and rafʿ al-haraj (removing difficulty) for those experiencing genuine financial hardship. For individuals who cannot afford to pay fidyah immediately due to their circumstances, the obligation remains one's responsibility and must be fulfilled once they or their family members have the financial means. Fidyah can be paid in instalments, though it should be settled as soon as possible since it’s a religious obligation. If they still lack the ability to pay by the time of their death, their heirs are required to settle it from the deceased's estate before distribution of inheritance.
Please note that during Ramadan 1447H, those who have already prepared to pay fidyah at the previous rate of $1.40 may do so during this transition period.
