Should someone who has performed Hajj or Hajj al-badal changes his name to Hajj / Hajjah?

The practice of adding ""Hajj"" or ""Hajjah"" to one's name after completing the pilgrimage has no foundation in Islamic teachings. There is no religious requirement to modify one's name on official documents or tombstones to reflect this accomplishment.

The essence of pilgrimage lies in its acceptance by Allah, rather than in worldly recognition. There is no evidence of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instituting or encouraging the use of such titles for those who have performed Hajj.

For the deceased, their name as recorded on the death certificate and tombstone remains unchanged and is believed to be the name by which they will be known in the afterlife. Adding ""Hajj"" or ""Hajjah"" to a deceased person's name is unnecessary and offers no spiritual benefit. The focus should be on the rewards of their acts of worship reaching their soul, rather than on worldly titles.

However, it is worth noting that while not religiously mandated, it is not inherently wrong if one chooses to place such a title on the tombstone of their loved ones. This practice, while not essential, can be seen as a personal choice to honour the deceased's spiritual accomplishment.
