What are the employment protections for Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL) and Adoption Leave (AL) introduced from 1 April 2025?
From 1 April 2025, the employment protections that apply to female employees on Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) have been extended to fathers on GPPL and adoptive parents on AL. It is now unlawful for employers to serve a notice of dismissal to employees while they are on GPPL or AL.
These protections ensure that fathers and adoptive parents can fully utilise their leave without concern, given that GPML, GPPL, and AL are designed to be taken immediately after the birth or adoption of a child.
What happens if an employee is dismissed while on GPPL or AL?
Affected employees may approach the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) for assistance.
Employers found in violation will be guilty of an offence.
Affected employees may file a claim against their employer to recover payment for any unutilised leave entitlement resulting from the dismissal.
