SPL and SPB are specifically intended to support caregiving and bonding with a newborn. As a stillbirth does not result in a living child to care for, parents are not eligible for SPL or SPB in these circumstances.

However, parents of stillborn children remain eligible for other government-paid leave schemes to support them physically and emotionally during this difficult time — mothers are entitled to 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML), and fathers are entitled to 2 weeks of Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL).
