Why is the Government taking over the employer-paid portion of child-related leave, and which leave schemes will be fully Government-funded?

Currently, employers pay for: ​

  • Maternity Leave: The first eight weeks for first and second confinements ​

  • Adoption Leave: The first four weeks for first- and second-order adoptions; and ​

  • The first three days of Childcare Leave.

When implemented, the Government will absorb all of these costs, up to the reimbursement cap, so that the full duration of all child-related leave schemes will be Government-paid. ​

This is intended to reduce the financial burden on employers and allow them to focus on facilitating leave-taking, covering arrangements, and other work-life friendly practices. ​
