What are the eligibility criteria for Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL)?
Eligible working fathers can enjoy up to 4 weeks of leave if they meet the following criteria:
For natural fathers¹:
Child is born/with estimated delivery date (EDD) on or after 1 Apr 2025.
Child is a Singapore Citizen (SC). If the child is not a SC at birth, the child must become a SC within 12 months from child's date of birth (inclusive of date of birth (DOB)).
He is/was lawfully married to the child's mother. Otherwise, he must be married to the child's mother within 12 months from child's DOB (inclusive of DOB).
For employee²: He must have served the employer for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the child's DOB.
For self-employed: He must have been engaged in a particular trade, business, profession or vocation for a continuous period of at least 3 months immediately before the child's DOB, and have lost income from ceasing to be actively engaged during the GPPL period.
GPPL can only be taken from the citizenship (citizenship by registration) and/or marriage date (whichever is later) onwards and within 12 months from the child's DOB (both dates inclusive).
For adoptive fathers:
The date of Formal Intent to Adopt (FIA) is on or after 1 Apr 2025.
He is not the natural father of the child.
The adopted child is less than 12 months old at point of FIA.
If the adopted child is not a Singapore Citizen, at least one of the adoptive parents must be a Singapore Citizen on the date of FIA.
For employee²: He must have served his employer for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the FIA date.
For self-employed: He must have been engaged in a particular trade, business, profession or vocation for a continuous period of at least 3 months immediately before the FIA date, and have lost income from ceasing to be actively engaged during the GPPL period.
Please note that GPPL reimbursement to an employer or payment to a self-employed father will be recovered if:
Adoption Order for the child is not granted within 12 months from the FIA date (inclusive of FIA date); or
If the child is not a Singapore Citizen, the child did not obtain Singapore Citizenship within 6 months from the Adoption Order date (inclusive of Adoption Order date).
¹ This does not include fathers with stillborn children. They are entitled to 2 weeks of mandatory paternity leave only.
² If he fulfils all GPPL criteria except being employed for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the child's DOB/FIA, and the employer is willing to grant GPPL to him, the Government may reimburse the employer the Government-Paid portion of his GPPL.
Child is born on or after 1 Nov 2021.
He must have served the current employer at the point of the child's date of birth.
He has not claimed for GPPB in respect of the same child order.
