What is Enabling Skills for Life Programme (ESLP) and what problem will it be solving?
One of the recommendations by the EMP2030 Taskforce on Community Living for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) was to review and enhance the continuum of services to equip PwDs with the functional skills to participate in and exercise greater independence at home and in the community.
Today, PwDs with higher support needs enrol in a Day Activity Centre (DAC), Sheltered Workshop (SW), or the Home-Based Behavioural Intervention Service (HBIS). Transitions across services are limited, even as PwDs’ needs change over the course of their lives.
The ESLP aims to improve the functional outcomes and quality of life for adults with disabilities through a person-centred, training-focused service with systematic skills acquisition in domains of independent living, communication, social emotional functioning and vocational training for living in the community and employment.
ESLP builds on what PwDs have learnt during their SPED years, and provides the relevant training and skill development as PwDs’ needs evolve over life stages.
As caregivers play an integral role in cementing clients’ skills acquisition, the programme also aims to involve and equip caregivers to reinforce clients’ learning in their natural settings.
