Why are parents whose child has passed away eligible for Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) and Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL) but not Shared Parental Leave (SPL)?

If your child has passed away, you will no longer be eligible for any unused portion of Shared Parental Leave (SPL). This is because SPL is meant to support caregiving and bonding with your child. However, appeals may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you need more time away from work, you are encouraged to speak with your employer about compassionate leave or use your annual leave entitlements.

For compassionate reasons, you are still eligible to take your full Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) and Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL).
