What is an Adoption Suitability Assessment (ASA)? How long is the process? How much does it cost? What is its validity period? Can I adopt another child using the same ASA?

An Adoption Suitability Assessment (ASA), issued by a Authorised Adoption Agency , assesses the applicant(s)’ suitability to adopt a child. Areas of assessment include, but not limited to, the applicant(s)’ home environment, motivations to adopt, attitudes towards parenting, risk of harm to a child, and ability to provide for a child.

An AAA takes an average of 5-8 weeks to complete an ASA from the date of the first interview. The process will be longer for complex cases.

The cost of undergoing an ASA is $2,000.

• The cost of undergoing an ASA for biological children and stepchildren is $1,100. There will be a cost of $315 for the ASA of each additional child whom the applicants wish to adopt concurrently.

• An ASA is valid for 2 years. After the expiry of the original ASA, the applicant(s) have to undergo a new ASA, as your circumstances (e.g. household members, income and expenditure, family dynamics) would have changed after a prior adoption.
