What are the legal implications when I adopt a child?

Updated by MSF

Upon an adoption order being made, all rights, duties, obligations and liabilities of the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the adopted child, in relation to the future custody, care and control, maintenance and education of the adopted child, including all rights to appoint a guardian or to consent or refuse consent to marriage, are extinguished. All the rights, duties, obligations and liabilities mentioned vest in and are exercisable by and enforceable against the adoptive parent(s) as though the adopted child were a child born to the adoptive parent(s) in a lawful marriage.

Please attend the mandatory Pre-Adoption Briefing (PAB) to find out more. Please refer to the MSF website for the link to register for PAB: https://www.msf.gov.sg/what-we-do/adoption/adoption-process/step-1-attend-mandatory-adoption-briefings
