The updated COVID-19 vaccines target newer strains of virus compared to the older versions of vaccines, to provide better protection against current and emerging strains. They are therefore expected to confer better protection against severe COVID-19 disease. The safety profiles of the updated vaccines are comparable to that of previous versions.
