Why is there an increase in the deductible?

Updated by MOH

The deductible sieves out smaller bills that can be paid via MediSave, and focuses MediShield Life coverage on larger, catastrophic bills. This keeps premiums affordable for all policyholders. By avoiding first-dollar coverage, the deductible also encourages prudent use of healthcare.

The deductible has not been adjusted since 2015. With rising bill sizes, the deductible has become less effective over time in filtering out smaller bills. If the deductible is not increased, the scheme will pay out for many more smaller bills, and premiums will have to increase even more.

To help Singaporeans cope with the increase in deductible, MOH will increase MediSave limits such that those with sufficient MediSave will generally not see an increase in cash out of pocket.

For those with insufficient MediSave, the Government will provide additional support such as MediSave top-ups. There is also MediFund to help those who are unable to afford their bills even after subsidies, MediShield Life and MediSave.
