What are the criteria and fees charged for estate administration?
The Public Trustee's Office assists to administer the Deceased's assets (which means the Deceased’s moneys, property, and assets) and distributes them to the beneficiary in accordance with the intestacy law.
This service is for families who need help managing a Deceased's estate where the total value is $50,000 or less.

Administration fees
The Public Trustee's Office charges fees to administer a Deceased’s estate.
Value of Estate | Charge |
For the first $5,000 | 6.50% |
For the next $2,000 | 6.00% |
For the next $3,000 | 4.25% |
For the next $10,000 | 2.75% |
For the next $30,000 | 2.25% |
Fee examples
Example 1: Estate worth $3,000
Fee: $3,000 × 6.50% = $195
Beneficiary receives: $3,000 - $195 = $2,805
Example 2: Estate worth $10,000
First $5,000: $5,000 × 6.50% = $325
Next $2,000: $2,000 × 6.00% = $120
Next $3,000: $3,000 × 4.25% = $127.50
Total fee: $572.50
Beneficiary receives: $10,000 - $572.50 = $9,427.50
Important fee information
Minimum fee: $15 (even for very small estates)
GST included: All fees already include GST
Cannot be waived: Fees are set by law and cannot be waived
Deducted automatically: Fees are collected from the estate moneys before distribution. For transfer of assets, the fees are collected before any transfer of the asset
