Is legal aid free?

You do not have to pay if you wish to seek legal advice from our Duty Lawyer.

However, legal aid is not free. Most applicants will be required to pay a contribution towards the costs of work done for legal assistance or legal aid matters.

The contribution payable is assessed having regard to an applicant's financial means, the nature of the case, the amount of work done and the amount of money recovered. The assessed contribution amount is unlikely to exceed $1,650. You will usually be required to pay a first instalment before any work is started on your case and a second instalment after your case has been completed.
