Are females required to serve National Service to be awarded scholarship?

Updated by MHA

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) offers both uniformed and civilian scholarships.

For the MHA Civilian Scholarship, there is no national service requirement for female candidates.

For Singapore Government Scholarship (SGS) and Local Merit Scholarship (LMS) tier of the MHA Uniformed Scholarship, you are not required to enlist and can proceed to study once you are awarded the Scholarship.

If you intend to apply for The SPF Scholarship (SPFS) or Singapore Merit Scholarship (SMS) for SPF, you need to undergo Basic Military Training and Officer Cadet School with MINDEF to build a strong leadership baseline, develop resilience and command capabilities critical for leadership roles in the SPF. Although conscription is not mandatory for females, SPFS scholars are groomed to take senior leadership positions. Completing BMT and OCS also ensures all scholars, regardless of gender, receive the same common foundational training and are fully prepared for the responsibilities of a senior officer.
