Can an overseas registered charity set up a foreign branch in Singapore? Will it be required to be registered as a charity?

As long as the objects of the organisation are exclusively charitable and it meets the basic registration requirements, the organisation is required to apply for charity status in Singapore. In the event that it does not fulfil basic registration requirements or its application is rejected, it may still operate in Singapore as a society/company but will not enjoy the tax exemption benefit that is applicable to registered charities.

Please also note that any organisation who wishes to raise funds for foreign charitable purposes must apply for a permit from the Commissioner of Charities. Please visit the Charity Portal >> “Fund-Raising” >> “Fund-raising Permits or Licenses” for more information.
