One of the considerations when assessing a charity application includes the use of specific words in the names for new set-ups that will only be allowed if the stipulated criteria are met. This is to prevent the misuse of some words that will convey the wrong impression to the public.

The organisation’s name cannot be:

• Similar to an existing charity;

• Misleading as to the true nature of the charitable purposes and activity to the public;

• Containing offensive words; or

• Entirely in a foreign language.

The organisation may contain the word:

• “Singapore” or its abbreviation if it used within brackets at the end of its name, to indicate the place of registration;

• “International” if the organisation has objects and activities serving beyond the community in Singapore; or

• “Foundation” if the organisation is a self-funded by an individual, family or for-profit company to aid the organisation’s charitable purposes or be financed by an endowment.
