Updated by HAS

The Varicella vaccine helps prevent chickenpox, a highly infectious disease caused by the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV).

Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through direct contact, respiratory droplets, or contaminated items. It causes an itchy rash across the body (except palms and soles), fever, fatigue, loss of appetite and headache. While typically lasting a week, it can also lead to serious complications including skin, lung, blood, bone and joint infections, as well as inflammation of blood vessels and neurological tissues such as brain and spinal cord coverings.
