What does the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine do?
The MMR vaccine provides protection against three highly contagious viral infections - (1) measles (2) mumps and (3) rubella.
These three viral diseases are primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets and direct contact with infected secretion and can lead to serious complications.
Measles, which is highly contagious, presents with fever, respiratory symptoms, white oral spots, and a spreading rash, potentially leading to serious complications including brain inflammation and permanent disabilities.
Mumps is characterised by swollen salivary glands causing puffy cheeks, along with fever and pain while eating, and can lead to hearing loss and inflammation of various organs.
Rubella, also known as German measles, typically presents with milder symptoms including low fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive pink rash that spreads from the face to the rest of the body.
