I am under a contract for service with a multinational company. Do I have to pay any duty or Goods and Services Tax (GST) to import my used car into Singapore?
The importation of used cars is subject to the payment of excise duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST).
You have to submit the original purchase invoice, freight and insurance papers, bills and receipts relating to other incidental charges, vehicle registration and all other relevant documents to Customs for assessment of customs value.
Excise duty is levied at the prevailing excise rate multiply by the customs value.
GST Value = prevailing rate of [Total Import Duty + Assessed Value of the car]
You have to obtain a Customs payment permit to make payment for the duty and GST.
The excise duty and GST paid will not be refunded if the motor car is re-exported.
Please contact the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for more information on the requirements to register a used car in Singapore.
