Is my son/ ward eligible for MTL-in-lieu?
The eligibility to offer an approved Asian Language (AsL: Arabic, Burmese and Thai) or Foreign Language (FL: French, German and Japanese) in lieu of an official MTL depends on several factors, including the student's parentage and nationality. Application for MTL-in-lieu is on a case-by-case basis. Your son/ ward may be eligible if he has:
lived overseas for a prolonged period of time and just joined our school system mid-stream;
had formal learning in Asian Language (AsL) or Foreign Language (FL) overseas;
a parent who is foreign-born and of non-Chinese/Malay/Indian ethnicity.
An application is required for eligible students and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. For more information on the application process, please email Ms Loh Pei Guat (HOD, MTL).
