The four-month extension will not be sufficient to fully cover students transitioning to educational institutions that will only commence their terms in August? Can PTC consider extending the concession validity date for student concessions for these students to cover the gap fully (i.e. another 4 months)?
Student concessionary fares are primarily meant to defray the cost of public transport for students who are travelling to school or for education. The extension of concession period aims to ease students’ transition, for those between two education stages and those who will be transitioning out of concession benefits entirely. This approach benefits all eligible students equally, regardless of their chosen pathways. The cost of providing more concessions for students is also borne by other fare-paying commuters through cross-subsidy. PTC has to be prudent and strike a balance between providing more concessions and managing the corresponding costs to be borne by other commuters.
