Why are the excess voluntary top-ups only refunded in the following year?

The CPF Annual Limit (AL) consists of both the Mandatory Contribution (MC) from your employer and Voluntary Contributions (VC) paid by you, if any. You are allowed to top up VC up to the CPF Annual Limit (AL) of the year.

As the MC for December can be paid by January of the following year, any excess VC top-ups made for the preceding year can only be finalized and refunded in the following year.

If your mandatory and voluntary CPF contributions have exceeded the CPF Annual Limit during the year, you can write to us to request for refund of the excess voluntary top-ups.
